SASSA Grant Types

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides various social grants to eligible South African citizens, permanent residents, and refugees. Below are the main types of grants available.

Older Person’s Grant

The Older Person’s Grant provides financial support to elderly citizens who meet certain criteria.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Aged 60 years or older
  • Not receiving any other social grant
  • Not cared for in a state institution
  • Monthly income and assets below a certain threshold

Current Amount: R2,090 per month (for individuals aged 60-75)
Enhanced Amount: R2,110 per month (for individuals aged 75 and above)

Required Documents:

  • South African ID or valid permit
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of income/assets

Disability Grant

The Disability Grant provides financial assistance to people with disabilities.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Aged 18 to 59 years
  • Medical assessment confirming disability
  • Not receiving another social grant
  • Not cared for in a state institution
  • Monthly income and assets below a certain threshold

Current Amount: R2,090 per month

Required Documents:

Child Support Grant

The Child Support Grant assists with the costs of basic needs for children.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Primary caregiver of a child/children under 18 years
  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Monthly income below a certain threshold
  • Child must reside with the primary caregiver

Current Amount: R510 per month per child

Foster Child Grant

The Foster Child Grant is provided to families caring for children placed in their custody by a court.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Court order indicating foster care status
  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Foster parent and child must reside in South Africa

Current Amount: R1,130 per month per child

Required Documents:

  • Your South African ID
  • Court order for foster care
  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Proof of residence

Care Dependency Grant

The Care Dependency Grant provides support for caregivers of children with severe disabilities who require permanent care.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Caregiver of a child with a severe disability
  • Child must be under 18 years
  • Medical assessment confirming disability
  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Monthly income below a certain threshold

Current Amount: R2,090 per month

Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant

The SRD Grant (R350 Grant) provides temporary assistance to individuals who are unable to meet their most basic needs.

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Aged 18 to 59 years
  • Unemployed
  • Not receiving income, support, or any other social grant
  • Not receiving UIF payments
  • Not a resident in a government institution

Current Amount: R350 per month

Required Documents:

  • South African ID
  • Contact information (cell phone number)
  • Banking details (if available)

War Veterans Grant

For veterans of World War II or the Korean War who are in need of financial assistance.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • South African citizen or permanent resident
  • 60 years or older
  • Served in World War II or the Korean War
  • Not receiving another social grant
  • Not cared for in a state institution
  • Monthly income and assets below a certain threshold

Current Amount: R2,110 per month

Required Documents:

  • South African ID
  • Proof of military service
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of income/assets

How to Apply for SASSA Grants

  1. Visit your nearest SASSA office
  2. Complete the application form
  3. Submit the required documents
  4. Complete an interview with a SASSA official
  5. Receive a receipt as proof of application

Applications are free, and you should receive feedback on your application within 90 days.
