How to Change Your Banking Details for the SRD Grant
If you are approved for the SASSA SRD grant and need to switch accounts or payment methods, use only the official SASSA process. Banking changes affect real money and often fail when the account name, phone number, or SMS link does not match SASSA’s records.
Before You Change Anything
Do these checks first:
- Make sure the bank account is in your own name. SASSA’s consent rules say the account cannot belong to another person and should not be a joint account.
- Confirm that the phone number on your SRD application still works. SASSA sends a secure link by SMS before you can change the details.
- Avoid rushing into a switch because of rumors. Postbank said in April 2025 that SASSA Gold Cards would continue working beyond 31 May 2025 until further notice, so beneficiaries should ignore pressure to change banks just because of card rumors.
Official SASSA Instructions:
According to the official SASSA SRD website, here is the step-by-step process:
- Visit the Official Portal: Go to the SASSA banking details link: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/said.
- Submit Your ID Number: Find the section titled “How do I change my banking details”. You will see a field asking for your ID number. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number here.
- Receive a Secure SMS: After submitting your ID, an SMS containing a secure, unique link will be sent to the mobile phone number you registered during your application.
- Follow the Secure Link: Click on the link you received in the SMS. It will take you to a secure page where you can update your details. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.
Critical Rules for Changing Your Payment Method:
Please pay close attention to these rules to avoid payment delays or issues:
- Bank Account Ownership: If you choose to have your grant paid into a bank account, you must be the owner of the account. SASSA cannot and will not pay a grant into another person’s bank account.
- Mobile Money Transfer: If you select the money transfer option (cash send) via a bank, the mobile phone number that receives the SMS must be registered in your name. SASSA cannot pay a grant to a mobile number registered to another person.
- Verification Period: Please note that the new banking details will only be used for future payments, and only after verification is complete. This process can take time, so your next payment might still go to your old account.
Safer Payment Choice Tips
Choosing a payment method is not only about convenience. It is also about keeping more of your grant.
| Option | Best For | Main Watch-Out |
|---|---|---|
| Personal bank account | Beneficiaries who already have a low-fee account in their own name | Bank charges and withdrawal fees can reduce the value of the grant |
| Postbank / SASSA card | People who want a familiar option and card-based access | Follow only official Postbank and SASSA notices about card changes |
| Cash send / retailer collection | People who do not want funds sitting in a bank account | You still need the correct phone number and may need to wait for the collection SMS |
In May 2025, SAnews reported concerns that some beneficiaries were moving to personal bank accounts without understanding service charges and even informal withdrawal fees. If you switch, compare the total cost of the account and how often you withdraw cash.
If the Secure SMS Does Not Arrive
If SASSA does not send the secure link:
- Double-check that your registered phone number still works.
- Confirm you entered the correct ID number on the official page.
- Read our guide on changing your phone number if you lost access to the original number.
- Contact SASSA before the next payment run if the problem continues.
Why You Might Need to Change Your Banking Details:
- You have opened a new bank account.
- Your old bank account has been closed.
- You want to switch from a cash-send option to a bank account for more security.
- You have lost access to the mobile number used for a cash-send option.
